Reasons 2 Rhyme creator and 2010 grant recipient from the United Arts Council of Greensboro, Josephus III continues to outdo himself. This poet extraordinaire is the visionary and host behind the 2010 MoSoul Poetry Festival. This year’s festival was held July 24 and 25 and featured 10 talented poets from North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. The two-day festival consisted of three programs offering something for everyone.
The first portion of the festival featured a community outreach component partnering the poets with youth at recreation centers such as Glenwood, Craft, Windsor, and Warnersville. The poets also performed for children at the Glenwood Library. The second festival component, called MoSoul at Midnight, was a special blend of late night poetry for a mature audience. Saturday’s event featured a main performance by the 10 poets at the Greensboro Cultural Arts Center.
Josephus III explained that the MoSoul Poetry Festival is Reasons 2 Rhyme’s biggest event of the summer that brings in more artists and more energy to downtown Greensboro. He said, “This event just keeps getting better and better as artists continue to pour into the city and share their talents and time.”
This year’s performers were Tim Jackson of Raleigh, N.C.; Church Da Poet from Durham, N.C.; Dasan from Durham, N.C.; Sean Ingram from Raleigh, N.C.; Brand 1 the Beast from Fayetteville, N.C.; Seven from Jacksonville, Fla.; Moe from Jacksonville, Fla,; Paul D from Albany, Ga.; Swayze Jones from Columbia, Md./Washington D.C.; the One Sun Lion Ra from Philadelphia, Pa.
Reasons 2 Rhyme is comprised of a variety of events celebrating the art of poetry while connecting to the community. The series offers gatherings in a series of venues throughout the year that are free and open to the public and expand the opportunity for poetry to be seen, heard, and experienced.
